About this site

What is this site?

Mention photography, and most people's minds turn to the photos they took on their last overseas holiday, of family and friends and of course the wedding photos, for those of us who are married.

Of course, photography is much more than personal snapshots. Photos have been used for political purposes ranging from wartime propaganda to the use of Peter Dombrovskis' work in the successful campaign against the construction of the Franklin Dam. Specially modified Hasselblad 70mm cameras were taken to the moon by the Apollo astronauts to capture history. Associate Press journalist Richard Drew's famous photo, The Falling Man captured another dark piece of history on 11 September 2001. Photos also permeate our everyday lives, from seeing pictures taken from the Hubble Space Telescope in a science textbook to advertising trying to convince us what to have for dinner.

Yet not all photos are created equal. Look through the photos of your last holiday, of the kids or any other album or collection you might have and you'll likely find that a certain few are 'special', sometimes due to memories but often for no apparent reason at all. The process of learning about why some photos 'work' and others don't was the inspiration behind my photography.

I'm at the beginning of my photographic journey, having only engaged in it as a serious pursuit since late 2007. I bought my first SLR camera as recently as February 2009. I'm just as interested in understanding and de-mystifying the science and processes behind photography, which will hopefully push me further as a photographer.

Welcome to my site, and enjoy the ride.

I'd like to use one of your photos...

Please let me know rather than "borrowing" my photos. I'd like to know where my photos end up and - at the very least - a citation or a link to the photo on this website would be nice.

I've found a problem with the website!

If you find a problem with the website, please let me know and I'll fix it as soon as I can. Since it seems that every browser renders pages slightly differently, I'll need to know what browser you were using when the error occurred.
